With an overall 66km network of trails, hikes can last from one to six days. Short trails include the 4km Cheetah Trail and the 17km day visitor trail that can be shortened to an 11km Bokmakierie Trail. Overnight hiking routes extend to the majority of the reserve. All trails start from the information centre, where permits are issued. This is also where you can pick up keys for overnight huts if you’re planning on braving the longer routes.

This nature reserve is also a Johannesburg City Heritage Site, as it’s the last conserved piece of the city’s ridges as they were before the discovery of gold in 1886. Hikes and guided tours happen every Sunday – these are short tours and hikes that alternate between mornings and afternoons. No booking is required but you do need to check their schedule for dates and times.

Hennops Hiking Trail
This scenic 11,3km trail is popular among many for its exciting features such as the suspension bridge, an old mine and a cableway running across a river. For major outdoor fanatics, after hiking there is an option to go swimming in the pool. Another authentically fun feature is the braai facility. Otherwise, you could choose to hire a tube to float down the river, all for the love of outdoors!

Klipkraal Hiking Trail
With three scenic trails available, namely the 13km Panorama, the 10km Kraal and the 3km Noko Loop, everyone gets a chance to pick a trail that they can physically handle. Some animals that hikers can look forward to spotting include wildebeest, zebra and a variety of birdlife. For those who would like to stay over, accommodation is provided and available for up to 30 people.

Hartbeespoort Dam Hiking Trail
This area is well known for having many fun activities overall – great for outings with family or friends. On the Hartbeespoort Dam Hiking Trail, you get a chance to hike up the Magaliesberg Mountain Range while taking in all the fresh air, away from the Joburg traffic and noise. Vultures and people hang gliding are some of the things to look forward to, so don’t forget your camera!
